The Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection

or the Survival of (R)Evolutionary Theories in the face of Scientific and Ecclesiastical Objections:

being a Musical Comedy about Charles Darwin (1809-1882)

ABOUT THE SHOW

It is 1858.  Darwin is slaving away at his latest book, a treatise on the reproductive organs of barnacles.  Through the post comes a document from his friend and colleague William Wallace, who has come up with a theory of how the different species of animals on the Earth came into being.  Darwin is enraged: Wallace’s theory is almost exactly the same as his own, which he has kept locked away in a chest these past twenty years, for fear of the controversy it will cause.

Wallace’s communication forces Darwin to re-open the chest, abandon his barnacles, and grapple once again with his neglected Life’s Work.  He leads the audience on a journey back through his own life, and around the world onboard the Beagle, to confront once again the characters from his past and race with Wallace to be the first to publish the theory.

The Origin of Species... is a one-man, multi-character comedy, using music and physical theatre to transport Darwin through his life and ideas.  It is suitable for all ages from 8.

SYNOPSIS

The play was written over three months in early 2008, in the Blue Mountains of Australia, a place Darwin visited during his travels and loved.  The piece’s first full performance took place on 20th October 2008, at the Southwark Playhouse, UK.    At that stage, the play had a shorter (duller) title.

The premiere of the show in its present form took place The Pleasance, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2009, where it enjoyed a hugely successful sell-out run (read reviews here), and another at Brighton Fringe in 2010. The show has since toured the UK extensively, as well as visiting Croatia, Sweden and Norway, and most recently played the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2012, where the show was shortlisted for Best Theatre Production, and John Hinton was shortlisted for Best Theatre Performer.
